We had a great turnout for the first part of Julia Fernandez de Maez’s workshops, titled “Baila con Fuego” (Dance with Fire). Julia is from Watertown, S.D. and has been dancing Flamenco professionally for 11 years, and danced formally with the Flamenco Nuevo Mexico Troupe in Central New Mexico. She also trained for the better part of five years on the Santa Fe plaza, and has continued her studies with the Zorongo Flamenco theater in Minneapolis. On Saturday we learned a style of Flamenco called “Alegrias” and it had wonderful steps, rhythms, foot percussions, spins and arm movements.
We learned so much from her, and if you want to check it out, it’s not too late! Part two of her workshop series is this upcoming Saturday, August 17th from 10:00 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. This session will focus on a traditional more folklore/gypsy piece called the “Sevillanas.” The class will be taught at an introductory level with many basics.
COST: $50 for 2.5 hour workshop (Saturday, August 17th)
WHERE: Lovely Dozen Studios! 1604 S. Washington
REGISTER: By sending an email and/or Paypal payment to firstname.lastname@example.org (payment can also be made at the door)
On Friday evening a few of our troupe members traveled to Fargo to perform in a Variety Show at Big D’s. There was a great turnout with a line out the door, and there were so many talented performers who got up on that stage and owned it! We thank them so much for having us!
We also have an update on our studio space and paperwork that is in progress to help our troupe grow and flourish! Stay tuned for big news about our troupe, but in the meantime we did pick out some wonderful paint colors to enrich our dance space! We hope to see you either at Julia’s workshop, Debbie and Amanda’s classes, or just drop by to ask us any questions you may have about Middle Eastern Dance and give it a whirl!
