Polynesian to Egyptian Dance

Briste Ean’s masterclass on Polynesian dance is well under way, and if you want to learn this  style of dance, there is still time! She will be teaching one more class this Sunday, September 29 at 4:30 p.m.

There will be two Sunday masterclasses in October with a change of topic and instructor! Natasha will be leading a series on Musicality for Bellydancers (sensitivity to and knowledge of music)! The first session will be Sunday, October 6 at 4:30 p.m. and the topic will be “Demystifying the Music,” with drums, Middle Eastern rhythms and dance drills. The second session will be Sunday, October 13 at 4:30 p.m. and the topic will be “Embodying the Band,” with foundational knowledge to strengthen your improvisational skills.

Another opportunity available to learn bellydance will be offered through the North Dakota Ballet Company at 1726 S. Washington Street, Grand Forks, on Saturday, October 5 from 10 a.m. to noon! Come learn about the ancient and powerful art of Classic Egyptian Dance! Let local Middle Eastern Dancer Natasha Thomas take you on a journey from the Golden Age of traditional Bellydance to Modern-Day Cairo, where dancers are groomed from a very young age to perform this highly stylized form of dance in traditional routines and locations from smalltown restaurant gigs to full size stage shows. You will learn the core moves common in the classic “Old School” Egyptian style of dance, as well as some of the more Modern “Cabaret” takes on this art form, and the way in which these moves can be put together to form beautiful combinations that can be fused with almost any dance style, culminating in the learning of a piece from the traditional “6 part routine” used to dance in modern Cairo restaurants! Attire for the workshop is workout casual (yoga pants and a tank top are fine, though if you’d like to have a full length circle skirt you’d like to practice moving in, you’re welcome to bring it too!) and shoes are not required (in fact, it’s recommended you try dancing without them!) Natasha has enjoyed dancing Egyptian style under the training of greats from Nadira Jamal to Ranya Renee, and she just knows you’ll love it too! Registrations for this event due by September 27th. Hope to see you there!
