World Bellydance Day Thanks! Plus a Look Forward…

What a weekend!! By the time this post hits the website, we’ll have finished our first ever day of World Bellydance Day workshops with Saroya Atlanta, and the Stage Show will have rocked the house at Firehall Theatre! As we write this post now, our hearts are filled with such gratitude towards all the wonderful people who helped make this weekend a reality – we wanted to make sure we set up the page to automatically thank those people while we were off recovering from what’s sure to have been a tremendous weekend! Namely:

Saroya of Atlanta, for teaching some amazing workshops!

Jennifer Norton, Marie Giarnero, and SaraCura  for bringing us wonderful, jingly, sparkling, and delicious things for us to buy and admire 🙂

The Lovely Sarah for hosting our Stage Show last night and manning the registration booth for workshops – it was such a joy to be able to have someone help us set the tone for the weekend, and be so friendly and beautiful while doing so!

Members of the Lovely Dozen Troupe for hosting this whole weekend and doing all that comes with that kind of responsibility – we couldn’t have done this all without you!

** Point of Contact, Registration & Location Coordinator: Aremi (Natasha Thomas)

** Hospitality Team (decorators of nametags and posters, hosters of vendors and wonderful
cooks/drink makers extraordinare!) Ana Ari, Amaya, Naminé, Thura, and

Our Sponsors and Venue Hosts: The CanadInns, Grand Forks YMCA, North Dakota School for the Blind, and Firehall Theatre, all of whom donated their spaces for us to use over the course of the weekend while we were raising funds for our local charity, the Community Violence Intervention Center (CVIC). Thanks to you we were able to spread the word about this event in a way we would never have been able to otherwise! Thank you also to our local news media for their help in sharing World Bellydance Day statewide.

And of course, all the workshop and show attendees, and friends who’ve supported us throughout this process: This event definitely couldn’t have happened without you! Your support and friendship mean more to us than you may ever know! As a token of how much we appreciate you all, we want you to be the first to know who’s coming to Grand Forks next to share all this Bellydance love we’ve been building! These are instructors and performances you WON’T want to miss!

Mahin , of the Daily Bellydance Quickie, October 19-20

and coming for World Bellydance Day 2014…

Lauren Boldt, former Bellydance Superstar and Current Performer with Bellydance Evolution!

Details on both of these fabulous guest instructors next year will be forthcoming on this page, and of course there will be plenty of goodness from your local Bellydancers to come between now, October, and next May 🙂 but we hope seeing these two big names will get you as excited as they have made us! We are excited to continue building what was started this year both professionally and personally, furthering the tremendous Belly-sister and brother relationships we so love to find and nurture. Much love to you all and happy dancing! We’ll see you again soon!

ThIs WaY to the ShimmyMob!

World Bellydance Day 2013 is upon us! As of 4:30 on Friday May 10th, Saroya of Atlanta will have joined us in Grand Forks, and if you’re reading this, you’re probably visiting our website for one of two reasons:

1. You have no idea who the Lovely Dozen or Saroya are, but saw a vehicle with this URL written on its car window and thought you’d check it out 🙂  or…

2. You are a Workshop or Show attendee in need of directions to our events with Saroya of Atlanta this weekend

Either way, welcome to our website! We’re so excited you’re here and can’t wait to show you what we’ve got going on this weekend! Here’s what’s happening:

Saturday, May 11th:

10:00am ShimmyMob (a national Domestic Violence awareness campaign, sponsored by the CanadInns and YMCA, with funds to benefit CVIC) – a Flashmob style event to occur in the lobby of the CanadInn, danced by 20 local (and not so local 🙂 dancers with varying levels of Bellydance experience. Ever been curious about Bellydance but not looking to commit to a full show or class? Come check this little performance out – it won’t last more than 5 minutes though so you’ll want to be there ontime!

8:00 pm Stage Show with Saroya of Atlanta – Saroya is a professional Bellydancer with over 30 years of experience who we have flown in from Atlanta, GA to teach a series of workshops with over 25 dancers from the Tri-State area (North Dakota, Minnesota, and South Dakota), all of whom will be performing some variation of Bellydance from around the world at this amazing show! Firehall Theatre (downtown Grand Forks, on the corner of 4th and University) Tickets onsale at the door, $8. A portion of every ticket will go to benefit the Community Violence Intervention Center (CVIC).

Now, if you’re a workshop participant looking for directions, here’s the number to call for someone who can tell you where to go: Natasha can be reached at 218-791-4220. Otherwise, you can find maps to our various locations for the weekend HERE, or look for signs with the letters “WBD” (or cars with this website written on them!) to lead you to appropriate places to park and shimmy 🙂

Happy World Bellydance Day!

Deadlines and Details!

Lovely-dozen-header_WBDGeneral Registration for our workshops is now closed, and with each passing day World Bellydance Day 2013 gets closer and our excitement grows! If you’ve missed our deadlines but still want to be involved somehow, email us at – we (and this weekend) will have plenty still to offer! Just how can you still be involved, you may ask? Here are the latest details of all the awesomeness, including the lineup of our stage show on Saturday, May 11th!

Friday, May 10th: Meet & Greet with Saroya of Atlanta.

Saturday, May 11th: Come watch us perform ShimmyMob at the CanadInns, 10am! Workshops will follow from 10:30 to 4:30 at the School for the Blind, then it’s off to our Stage Show at the Firehall Theatre, which we are excited to tell you now will be featuring the talents of not only Saroya Atlanta and members of the Lovely Dozen Troupe (Ana Ari, Altaira, Amaya, Aremi, Briste Ean, Lily, Namine, Saphira, and Thura), but Farasha (also from Atlanta), Annakiya Seher, Enchanting Erica, and Ezma Siddiqah of Fargo, Gaia Sophia of Pine River, Minnesota, and students of the 12 Houses Bellydance Class! If you’re a performer who sees your name mentioned here, stay tuned to your emails for further details – if you don’t see your name here, not to worry! The Meet & Greet Hafla has more than enough room and we’ll be emailing you folks soon as well – we’re very excited to be having such talent joining us! Tickets will be $8 at the door, with partial proceeds to benefit the Community Violence Intervention Center, our local charity for the ShimmyMob campaign.

Sunday, May 12th: we’ll finish the weekend with more workshops, then a chocolate party at the School for the Blind with Dove Creations rep Marie Giarnero, who will also be vending veils and other lovely accessories throughout the weekend. Also providing scrumptious wares to sell will be SaraCura, Jennifer Norton (Briste Ean of the Lovely Dozen), and the owners of our class’s former home, 12 Houses!

So, all in all, it’s going to be a delicious event and we can’t wait to share it with our friends and neighbors in the greater Grand Forks community! Stay in touch and spread the word: the Bellydancers are coming!
